Between vaccinations and flu shots it is impossible for children to avoid interaction with needles. In order to prevent needles from becoming a fear or phobia, there are several things you can do as a parent.
First, remain calm yourself. If the child is old enough to understand, prepare the child beforehand by talking with them. A topical anesthetic may be used to lessen the pain. While the needle is being used have your child breathe deeply and find ways to distract them. Praise the child when it is over. Children’s acetaminophen may be used afterwards to prevent fever or help with pain.
