In 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) began recommending that infants be placed on their backs to sleep. This recommendation has helped to lower the number of sudden infant deaths (SIDS). On the other hand, the number of deaths by suffocation, entrapment, or asphyxia has increased. In order to avoid such an occurrence do not allow your child to sleep on a soft surface, like a couch or chair, or in a crib that does not meet safety standards. And although it is tempting to fill a baby’s crib with cute bedding, soft blankets, and cuddly toys, the AAP recommends having only a tight fitting sheet covering a firm mattress in a baby’s bed.
